1 down, 15 to go!

Nursing school is nearly complete. This isn't going to be the most entertaining post you've ever read. However, it's a landmark in life for me - so it's worth blogging about.

Yesterday I submitted my top 3 choices for my practicum, which will begin the last week of June. And my requests went as follows:
1) ICU
2) Telemetry (I heart the heart)
3) Emergency Department

I made these choices strategically. In practicum, I'm at the hip of a nurse for 7 weeks working his/her schedule. It's a chance for me to do something that I hope to be in some day - however, I won't have as heightened of a fear of killing a patient. (since my nurse will be there) Also, doing my practicum in these departments may increase my chances of getting a job in a better unit of the hospital?!

There's no psych in my sponsoring hospital. And...I want to learn the tricks of the trade and skills on the medical side! (Plus...the emergency department has a ton of psych!!! My 1st day of ED was incredible!)

I have also submitted my idea for my Capstone Project - which is HUGE. I've probably put in 6 hours total just reseraching to FIND a topic. (ahhhhhhh!!!!!!! so frustrating) And I have settled on:

The effectiveness of long-term health after open heart surgery (CABG) in comparison to PTCA stents (angioplasty). Woooo hooooooo!!!! Poor Ryan is going to have to listen to me rattle on and on about stents, open heart surgery, and Plavix for the next 15 weeks.

I think it's kind of interesting, though. Because how many of you know someone that's had MULTIPLE stents placed?! However, after a BIG surgery - that person has a daily reminder with a giant scar on their chest!

Oh! And Ryan graduates in exactly one week!!! Life is good. So send prayers our way during his finals next week. Also, he kicked butt in his "Wireless Power Transmission" Senior Design Project! He even got on the news!

Well, I am wishing everyone a great weekend and a Happy Mother's Day! I sure wish I could be spending Sunday with my favorite woman.

Ten on Tuesday

I am so happy this Tuesday is over. I really think that God put a sign up in the sky today that said "World, you're goal is to work as hard as possible to break Abby down. Really tear and rip at her, and don't stop until she cries."

It was just non-stop. But, a rough day ended out great in the long run - and was a learning experience. Sometimes, we need to remember that we can't solve all the problems in the world. And, crying is okay sometimes. Even though I like to be "Always smilin' Ice Woman".....

But here 10 on Tuesday! Before I start reiging in the pity party...

1. Do you prefer markers, crayons, or colored pencils?

Definitely markers. To be specific - the scented markers. Mm....remember those? My favorites were brown (cinnamon), yellow (lemon), and red (cherry). Mmmm.....

2. As a child, how did your parents celebrate your birthday? (Parties, cake, you pick the dinner, etc.)
They always came into my room early in the morning before they headed off to work - and sang happy birthday. Then I'd run upstairs, open presents, and eat breakfast before school. I always got to pick out my favorite meal and we'd have a family dinner. I always had a birthday party with my school-friends too.
3. How do you feel about leggings?
Under-armour leggings are great for running in the cold! I also like wearing them under my scrubs. Yep. Kinda like the "compression stalkings" that are stereotyped for the elderly. I use them on days where I'm on my feet for 12 hours straight! I don't want those varicose veins - so circulation is a must!!!!!

Fashionably, I'm not a big fan of leggings on myself. I think some people look cute in them. I feel aboslutely ridiculous and silly in them.

4. How do you prefer to follow directions? With a map? Words?
Definitely words. Lists, in fact. I don't do maps. I'm not a visual person, I am a list person. And don't try talking me through directions either. I don't listen and drive concurrently....
5. What do you eat for snacks?
Apples (granny smith, to be specific), lemons, frozen peaches (thawed out), cucumbers, and carrot sticks. I eat snacks frequently and rarely go anywhere without them! Also, good hearty granola bars are life-savers for me on some days!

6. Have you ever ordered anything from an infomercial or bought any As Seen on TV products?
No I haven't, and I don't really see myself ever doing it. In fact, when I see something advertisedon those infomercials -I feel as if it's been discounted because it's on an infomercial.

However, I do own a Magic Bullet. And Ryan got one of those "Sham-Wows!". I am not sure how "wowed" I am by it at this point.....................

7. What’s your favorite thing about summer?
Days of all-outdoors. Where you come inside in the evening and your cheeks are sun-kissed, eyes burn, and your just drainnnned from the fresh air!!! I love days of waking up, putting on a swimming suit, and wearing it all day. Love fresh batches of iced tea with lemon. Home-made slushes. All-grilled meals. Mojitos. The sound of crickets. Monsoon season (here in AZ) and the excitement of the big storm rolling in (we have the best lightning EVER)!!!

8. Do you have a tattoo? What and where is it?
No tatoo. And once again, never will. Thank God. I'm absolutely terrified of tatoos. HIV! Hepatitis! Ahhh!! Scary. Painful. No thanks.

9. Are you good at journaling?
Nope. Terrible. I have tried starting journals and have been quite unsuccessful. I feel like I've writing papers all day, and the last thing I want to do at the end of the day is write more......This blog is my substitution for a journal - and some day I can look back at the archives of my life....

10. What’s your favorite way to eat a hamburger?
Okay, this probably doesn't count as a hamburger. But, my little secret is ..... when I go to a barbeque, I make sure no one looking - and I build my burger of the following: Bun, pickles, lettuce, tomato, more pickles, a few more pickles, saturated in ketchup & mustard galore!!!!! There is NO SUCH THING as "too much ketchup & mustard" (unless you're like...a diabetic. Then too much ketchup is bad)

Oops! I forgot the meat. Whooops......

On the side from that -we experimented this weekend. And I made turkey burgers. Instead of a bun, I put it on a portabello mushroom cap - and grilled it. YUM!!!!!!! I highly recommend this delicacy!

April Recap!

What?!?! April is done? Where did it go? How did it slip from me so fast!! It was a good month, in hindsight (the whole 10 seconds it seemed to last?....)

It's recap time!
Current Book(s):
Got a new one, folks! "Critical Care Nursing". I just started reading it tonight. The print is entirely too small. And there are no pictures. I miss my psych book.

They had animated photos of all the psychiatric/developmental disorders. My favorite was the "ADHD" photo a kid jumping off a bed going absolutely mad. :)

Current Music:
Hmmm.....probably classical of all shapes and forms. It helps me focus and study. I especially like Chopin and Tchaikovsky (too lazy to look up his correct name-spelling).

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure:
My newest shame-inducing guilty pleasure would have to be Graham crackers with milk as a bedtime snack. However, I plan to make a recipe today that will be using up the rest of my graham cracker box - so that will take care of my "latest addiction"

Current Colors:
Hmm......Pink. Bright pink. It's the color of my new geraniums and gerber daisies!

Current Obsessions:
Summery dresses, shorts, beach attire, outdoor decor, patio furniture, grilling - I'm in a summery mood!

Current Drink:
I have a new style of drinking my iced coffees. I get Almond flavoring in them, with skim milk. Almond goes amazing with coffee!! I recommend you try it.

Current Song:
Pomp and Circumstance? I don't really have "a song" right now. But graduation is the theme of life. I was suposed to "walk" Saturday (chose not to do it, however), Ryan graduates in 2 weeks, and I officially graduate in 4 months!!

Current Movie:
Cool Hand Luke! I have always liked this movie, and I finally made Ryan watch it this weekend. I forgot how great of a movie it is. Except for the part where he eats 50 eggs. That makes me seriously sick to my stomach!

Current TV Shows:
Ryan & I have kind of taken a break from television. We rarely spend time together with our crazy schedules - so have made a decision to spend our any moment of downtime without the televison. It's been kinda nice! (we did watch a movie Friday night...but that's a little different)
But if I do happen to turn on the tv while I'm cooking dinner - it's always either Hannity or the O'Reily Factor (Fox News)
Current Wish-List:
New vacuum cleaner.
To get through the next 8 weeks of Critical Care without losing my mind.
A lemon tree.

Current Needs:
To get my carpets cleaned!
An affirmative answer on what the hell is going to happen with my hospital in August and if they will honor my contract or let me go. It is stressing me out beyond belief!!!! That is a "blog post" in itself! :-(

Current Triumph:
I got an A in Psychiatric Nursing. I'm also feeling triumphant that I have 3 little tomatoes budding out of my plant!!!

Current Bane of my Existence:
Well, starting tomorrow at 4:30 am when I wake for my 1st 12 hours of Critical Care clinicals......
I am terrified. In psych, I didn't have the fear of "Hm...if I don't do this correct, I could kill my patient". I understand I'm a student nurse so someone will be double checking me - but I'm still scared!

Current Goals:
-My academic goals are not as bold as usual. I just plan on getting through this. I don't see A's happening this next 8 weeks - but who knows. Maybe I will surprise myself.
-To have a successful graduation party. We have only cooked for small groups - now we're entertainging a party for 30+ people?! I'm a little stressed...

Current Indulgence:
When I water my flowers in the morning. I do it early before the sun comes completely over the mountains, the air is still  crisp & cool, and I feel a giant sense of gratification.

Current Blessings:
The fact that in 2 weeks my family will be flying here to visit! The fact that the weather has been surprisingly cool lately - which has been nice & refreshing. (cool as in 60-70's).

Current Slang or Saying:
"Ay dios mio!!!!"  - which is Spanish for "Oh my God!" - used when something is on your nerves, frustrating, catching you off guard. It's been "stressy" around here! :)

Current (Fav) Outfit:
Anything that is not scrubs. Friday when I got home from the gym at 5 pm - I insisted on doing my hair and putting on real clothes purely because I wanted to feel like a human!
Current Excitement:
In 2 weeks the ECE Department of the U of A gives me my husband back!
Current Mood:
My mood is quite apprehensive today -because I feel like I'm walking into tomorrow blind. However, I'm feeling pretty upbeat. With the craziness of school, exciting things coming up - I'm in "power mode"! I love being "go-go-go"!
