My Current Challenge

I typically lead a pretty non-indulgent, healthy lifestyle. 3 meals a day usually include leafy greens. I don't eat fast food, no processed food, and minimal carbs. Keeping fruits and vegetables in my house is a challenge, because they are eaten so fast!

So I work out hard 6 days a week, eat fairly clean, but what I see in the mirror just doesn't add up. I don't look like someone who (on average) runs 25 miles/week, bikes 30-60 miles, and lifts 3 days.

Well, I've found the culprit.

It's called the candy jar full of chocolate covered coffee beans, and dark chocolate kisses, and red vines at work.

It's the M & M's I "treat" myself with after dinner at night.

Every now and then these "cheats" are okay, but it's more of a daily thing than a "cheat".

So myself and 2 other girlfriends (and training buddies) are challenging each other to a week of only putting "good" and nourishing food in our bodies! If we make it 2 weeks, we are treating ourselves to a pedicure.

So far it's really been easy! It's always that 1st taste of sinfulness that keeps you coming back for more, right?

To keep me from snacking in the evenings at home, I've been making pitchers of infused water and drinking tons of it. (This is the time of year where I get so dry and dehydrated! The desert is in full force right now!)

It's also really helpful to have other people to hold you accountable. I've tried doing little challenges like this before, but usually I'll falter.

What's your diet nemesis? Candy? Chips? Soda? I definitely have an unfortunate sweet tooth.

A weekend with my favorite people: Just what my soul needed

As I look back on the weekend, I am almost pinching myself thinking, "Did that really just happen? Where did the time go?"

I hadn't seen my Mom in almost 6 months, my Dad in 1 year - and have been feeling extremely homesick. I have learned over the past few years that "homesick" has nothing to do with location - but with the loving arms of those you miss.

Lately I have been in kind of an emotional fog. Not a very exciting or riveting person to be around, with not a lot to talk about. And I feel like that fog was cleared this weekend! Especially when my husband walked in the door Friday night (we haven't seen each other in 3 weeks).

It was a wonderful weekend. Here are a few of the things that filled my weekend with joy:
  • Mornings of drinking multiple pots of coffee and catching up on life -- I have always cherished weekend mornings with my mom and dad.....
  • Showing them the sights of Tucson
  • Taking them to the Farmers Market to show them that things really do grow in the desert!
  • Going to some of our favorite restaurants - enjoying good food on patios with perfect weather
  • We went to a musical comedy theater Friday night which was awesome! I was so happy my parents enjoyed it as much as Ryan and I do!
  • Sitting out by the pool playing International Rummy while sipping margaritas
  • Waking up Saturday morning with my husband next to me, and getting to talk about our day ahead -- I've missed that.

These visits always go way too fast! But I am so grateful that they got to make the trip from North Dakota to spend some time with me! I am very lucky to have parents who I love and get along with so well.

This photo was taken right away - reunited after 1 year! Big smiles :)
This was the 1st night, we went my favorite gastropub up the street from my house called "Noble Hops" -- and we got an extra treat! There was live music, which was an amazing Spanish Guitarist.

This is Friday night @ a modern Italian eatery called North.  The atmosphere here is just gorgeous (if you can see the mountains in the background)

Ryan and I reunited....glowing with smiles!
