"You never know what you're gonna get"

That's the attitude with me, and my "beauty/style" life.

In my lifetime (which has been considerably short...I'm 22!) I have had:

-Very very short hair, long hair, red hair, auburn hair, blonde hair, REALLY blonde hair, brown hair, brown hair with blonde high lights, brown hair with red & blonde highlights, permed hair, straight hair....

...You get the point....I'm pretty "bold" about hair. It's hair. It'll grow back. If it's too blonde, you can dye it darker...etc.

So we have had 3 consecutive days that have hit about 100. Yesterday was 101. I'm burning up!

It's been 6 months since I've had a haircut.

So...I went in today for a "trim".

And I went from this:

To This.....

The "kicker" is that my husband, Ryan...has absolutely no clue I did this. I told him this morning, "I think I'm going to go in to get my hair trimmed. It's getting rather unhealthy".

What I didn't tell him is that I'd be getting multiple inches chopped off!! Luckily, Ryan's idea of a "good haircut" for me -  is one that makes me happy. He doesn't care what I do with my hair - as long as it makes me smile, and doesn't involve 2 hours of blowdrying/straightening/curling/primping. So, I think he will approve!

I fee so much less hot!!!!!! This heat did it for me! And maybe it makes me look older? I'm sick of people telling me I look 14!!!!!! Especially when I have patients/patients family's in the ICU look at me and say, "YOUR taking care of me???!! YOUR going to be a nurse in a few months? You look like your 12!"

I think I am due for a recipe post.

Today it almost hit 100 in Tucson. Yikes! So, what better a topic to blog about than soup?! ;)

Many have the attitude that "soup is for cold weather". But, it's never reallly cold here. If I followed that rule, we'd never get to eat soup! That would be a very, very sad day.

Now, normally when you see Minestrone it is a vegetarian Italian soup. However, as I've stated previously - I have a carnivore of a husband. And a "Vegetarian-Meal" just wouldn't quite fly! So I serached around at Minestrone recipes - and concoted my own little "brew"!  Here it goes!
  • 1/2 lb Ground Turkey
  • 1 14.5 oz can Stewed Tomatoes
  • 1 can Garbanzo beans
  • 1.5 Beef Bullion Cube (you can do the low-sodium style, or can of beef broth, but I need my Na+) ;)
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2-3 Bay leaves
And here is where it gets kinda murky, since I don't really do recipes......
  • About 1/2 Red onion, chopped
  • Chopped red, yellow, & green Bell peppers - about 1 cup?
  • 2 carrot sticks, chopped
  • 3 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 Basil Leaves, finely chopped
  • A few pinches of Crushed Red Pepper to taste (how spicy are you feeling?)
  • A couple shakes of Oregano, Majoram, Pepper (more than a couple), Cumin (more than a couple)
  • A few swigs of Red Wine (wow, this recipe is getting about as sloppy as a soup sandwich...)
  • Pasta noodles of choice - as needed
  1. Brown the ground turkey, drain off any excess fat/nastiness.
  2. Add in beef broth, stewed tomatoes, and seasonings (basil, oregano, garlic, bay leaves, etc)
  3. Add in carrots, celery, onions, peppers, wine.
  4. Lastly, add in the garbanzo beans (this should go in last, so they don't get mushy)
  5. You can either let this simmer for a few hours (like I did), or you can serve immediately!
Now, for the pasta.....This is not a mandatory addition, but we tried it this time. And I did home-made. Which was a 1st!

My pasta was a general Betty Crocker cookbook recipe. Except I added in some basil & oregano to the flour to give a little extra "oomph"!

When serving the soup, serve with some pasta noodles. This soup makes excellent leftovers!

Just a little warning, if you combine the home-made pasta + soup for "left-overs", it will turn from "soup" to "pasta" because the noodles soak up the broth!

This soup is amazing and it truly warms thy soul! It's easy, too!

Here are some photos!

Soup a-simmering....
Rolling out my dough. I am not a baker-extraordinaire - so excuse the messiness lack-of-skill...

Noodles are hanging - the most fun part of all...
The finished product!!

Ten on Tuesday

1. What is your favorite piece of furniture in your house?
Our king-sized sleigh bed. Boy that sounds good right now. Especially since I'm sooo sick and I had a 12 hour clinical today, and 7 hours of lecture on EKG's tomorrow. All I want to do is curl up in bed with heating pads and pillows. :-(. Why is it that my toughest semester of nursing school is my "ill-est"? :(

2. If it was raining so hard on a Saturday that you couldn’t leave your house, what would you spend the day doing?
I would search around for ingredients and put together a fantastic soup or stew - slow cook it all day. I would also make home-made bread. And probably bake some cookies. I'd also sip some lemon-tea. Clean the house, organize cupboards, maybe watch a comforting movie like "Pretty Woman" or "Ferris Buellher's Day Off".

3. What was your favorite candy as a child?
Hmm..probably Fun Dips. I remmeber that was my "naughty" thing I'd purchase when Mom & Dad weren't looking. You know - where you lick the white stick, and dip it in pure sour-tangy sugar. I'm going to be honest - I'd still eat a fun dip in a heart-beat. It's been years, though.

4. Did you get an allowance? What was it based on? What did you do with it?
I didn't get an allowance as a kid. I'd get paid if I did something special like stain our big fence, paint a building. But all the chores were just part of living in the house!

Back in Ped's, I had to do an assignment on "Child-Rearing" - and my subject was on allowances/finances. I have torn feeling about allowances. Where do you guys stand, just out of curiousity?

5. Do you have a favorite Etsy store?
Nope. Never been to etsy? I still don't get what it is..... But everything i've seen from "Etsy" is really cool!!

6. Do you prefer time with family or time with friends?
Family!! Hands down. I would take family over friends any day.

7. Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, or Animaniacs?
To be completely honest, I didn't really watch cartoons as a kid. Saturday mornings (cartoon-time) was spent either at the lakes swimming in the summer, outdoors riding my bike, or just plain talking my Mom's ear off in the morning!

8. Best daytime talk show: Oprah, Ellen, The Doctors, Tyra (ha!), Dr. Oz, or Dr. Phil?
AHHHH NONE! I could mock Oprah's show for hours. It's awkard. This is a blog-post in itself. Dr. Oz/Dr. Phil sicken me. I don't even know what "the Doctor's" are. Ellen annoys me. And I have never watched Tyra! I just don't do daytime.

9. Would you rather have the power of invisibility or the ability to fly?
There are moments where I want to become invisible. But I would much rather be able to fly. I could travel very fast. Plus, it would just be fun and liberating.

 10. Name 1 thing you love about being an adult.
Just having autonomy in general! I have a love-hate relationship with my life-phase right now. It's exciting because I'm making choices on where I will plant my seeds career-wise. But stressful, because of the UNKNOWN. Which "Type-A-Me" doesn't like that dreaded word "unknown". But, I love having total control over my life and my decisions.
