The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports

This weekend my favorite time of the year has arrived! It's not May Day, either. No, it's not Cinco de Mayo. It's not the Tucson Folk Festival, either! .............

*Cue the trumpets.....*

The Kentucky Derby kicks off tonight - official races are tomorrow!!!!

Some of you may not be aware of my obsession with the Kentucky Derby. If you ask my husband, Ryan -- you would hear roars of laughter from him. For he thinks this is just hilarious and odd.

Why? Because I'm so not a sports fan. And beyond that - I really, really don't like animals. So why would I enjoy a "sporting event" involving animals?

Beats me!?

But I have made Ryan promise me that if we're every disgustingly rich, and just can't think of what to do with "allll" of our money (this won't ever happen...but I can dream!) -- we must take a trip to Louisville, attend the Derby.

Now, we could settle for the infield and just enjoy the atmosphere. But I would prefer to be escorted to "Millionaires Row" where the real action occurs.

I have spent time selecting my outfit and hat. The hat being the most important, of course.

Tomorrow, I plan on shaking up my first Mint Juleps. And I will be listening for "Lookin' At Lucky" to win. Why I chose this horse? ..... It's a little of my "residential pride". He was trained in Tucson, and his jockey also used to train in Tucson (Garret Gomez). "Lookin' AT Lucky" is chose to win, and his Gomez came in 2nd in the 2009 race with the hourse "Pioneerofthe Nile"!

So tomorrow, I will be donning my big floppy hat and cheering on Lookin at Lucky during the Run for the Roses 2010!!
Too bad it's not like this big flowery red one.........*sigh* ;)

Ten on Tuesday

1. Think back a decade, do you remember what your first cellphone was? Was it as cool as Zack Morris’s phone?
It was pretty basic. I think I was 15 or 16 when I got it. It was neccessary, though. I drove an hour to MSUM in Fargo ("the big city") weekly for trombone lessons; and 30 minutes to piano lessons weekly as well. With all the winter storms, and me being on the hour for up to 3 hours/week - having a phone was nice!

It was no blackberry, which is not neccessary for kids. I seriously saw like a 9 year old the other day walking down the street playing on his crackberry. Unbelieveable!

2. What is the first children’s book you remember being read to you?
"One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" - by the fantastic Dr. Seuss. I can still hear my Mom's animated voice reading it!
3. What was your first car? Did you love it or hate it?
It was a Toyota Celica, passed down to me by Lisa. I loooved it. The headlights popped up and the antennea was retractable! Let's not talk about the loss of that car. Very sad and irresponsible story on my part!

4. Who was your hero growing up?
My Dad. He will always be my hero, too :)

5. Think back to your first kiss. Was it everything you dreamed of?
I repress bad memories. Ish. The only kisses I remember are with my husband! :)

6. What was your first BAD hairstyle choice? (Extra points for embarrassing photos)
"Bad" is an understatement my friends. If I had a picture of it, Iwould scan it. I once wanted my mom to burn every picture of me in those days. Picture this:
-Boy-cut short hair
-Junior high awkward
-Chubby, chubby, chubby girl!!!
-Gross. No wonder I wasn't exactly the "popular one" in junior high......

7. What was your first realistic dream? (One where you had to think “Oh dang, was that a dream?”)
Realistic dream? Still waiting for that to happen. It has become part of our morning routine to analyze Abby's weird-whack dreams and try to figure out "What did I see/do yesterday that would make me dream about that!?"
A dream-analyst (or psychiatrist) would have a hay day with my dreams....

8. What was the first phobia you remember developing?
Definitely dogs. I remember going to houses of friends/families with dogs and being absolutely terrified of getting out of the car!!! Nothing traumatic ever happened to me with dogs, I've always been afraid.

9. Which character on Sesame Street do you most identify with?
I had to google this, because I don't remember the different characters. And I couldn't just choose one...So:
-"Abby-Cadabby" was a muffet created to increase the "female muppets". I chose her just purely due to her name.
-Some days I'm like Bert. Kind of boring and withdrawn. However, I don't collect paperclips....
-Some days I'm like Elmo - giddy, silly, and I'm extraordinarily ticklish. Like to the point where I hate being touched.
-Some days I feel like Big Bird - I feel goofy and out-of-place.
-And there are days where I feel like Oscar the Grouch. I just want to hermit into a garbage can and shoe everyone away!

10. What was the hardest goal you ever accomplished?
First thing that comes to mind is the marathon - but that's just due to the training. By the time the actual race came - I was ready!
So I choose a time in my life where I have made "personal" changes. We humans can all be rigid at times - and I am the queen of rigidity! So changing one's attitudes/lifestyle/way of thinking can be *not so easy*! I'm a healthier and happier person because of little improvements/changes in life!

Weekend Recap!

This is the last week where my mind feels...simplified. For next Monday at this time I will be in clinicals eithe rin the ER or the ICU - Critical Care starts, and I am t-e-r-r-i-f-i-e-d!! I'm just not the ER type of gal. We'll see, though....

I had a great weekend though! During the week, Ryan & I kind of turn into robots! So when we get a weekend together - it is wonderful! So this weekend I.........

  • Got a great score on my Psych-nursing ATI test. Which really isn't that big of a deal "grade-wise" - but is indication that I will do well on my boards! So it makes me happy :-)
  • Did a "trial run" on some of the food we'll be cooking for the grad-party. I made: shredded chicken, cilantro-lime black beans, and guacamole! Turned out fabulous!
  • Did an 8 mile run. I love long runs when I'm not training for something - I can just breath and enjoy!
  • Watched the sunrise Saturday morning prior to my run on our deck! I am loving AZ right now, sun comes up at about 5:40 am! (I'm weird, mornings give me a high)
  • Made Taboulleh salad for the 1st time ever. Amazing. Highly recommend it! Great for a light lunch.
  • Went out for Sushi at Ra - our favorite restaurant!
  • Ordering a drink with dinner, and had to send it back asking for more diet coke. The waiter laughed at me, and said this rarely happens. I guess it's proof of how much of a "party-animal" I am not!
  • While picking weeds in our backyard, I found more cigarrette-butts from the neighbor. (Grrrrr)
  • We took a trip to the gym after mass yesterday and lifted weights together , and now sitting/standing is very difficult for both of us!
  • Layed out our deck and soaked up the sun!
  • Enjoyed an all-grilled dinner last night outdoors (picture below)
  • Had a lovely campfire - which is the most nostalgic smell ever!!!
  • I dominated Ryan in Scrabble. This occurs rarely - he usually beats me. So I now get bragging rights for a while! :)
Grilled sweet potatoes, red peppers/onions, pinapple, and steak!
This is my new favorite way to eat sweet potatoes: boil for about 10 minutes until slightly tender, season with fresh parsley/sea salt/pepper/oregano, and grill for about 10 minutes!
