It's all about the ounces.....Our new venture into backpacking!

We've always been the "outdoorsy type". We take a camping trip whenever the time & weather permits. Every since our U-Haul pulled into Arizona, we were researching the best hiking trails....

There's always been a hobby that's been the object our affection. But this hobby required some budgeting, researching, planning and saving.

Well, it's finally come the time where if we don't start now...we'll be too old to do it. So my early birthday present this year was my backpacking gear! A pack, sleeping back, sleeping pad, trail shoes (and trail running shoes)......(some of which were purchased at the Summer Hut Swap meet this weekend - which was a great opportunity to buy lightly-used gear at SUPER discounted prices)

This weekend we took them out for a "test run".

I purchased the Osprey Viva 50. It's an amazing women's pack - all about comfort - nice and light. If needed, it could sustain me comfortably for 10 days.

Backpacking is a new state of mind.

It's all about sustaining with the least and the lightest. It's about asking yourself questions like, "How many changes of clothes do I really need?". You have to choose between "food/water or clothing" -- it's all about weight.

Although this sounds like a rather unhygienic hobby, I'm kind of excited about it. I get excited thinking about the adventures and sights we will see!

Our 1st big trip on the radar is Kalalua trail in Hawaii. It's an 11 mile hike through mountains/rainforest to get to an exclusive beach that can only be reached by hiking! Our goal is to do it summer of 2015!

We made my 1st trip easy, as it's a bit of an adjustment getting used to carrying a 25 lb pack! Mine was only 15 lbs on Saturday. We did an 8 mile hike through an area called "Seven Falls" - where you had to cross streams. It was good "balance practice" for me!

Notice our sweaty shiny faces! It was about 78-80 degrees...which felt warm!

Ryan's pack is just a "bit" heavier than mine. Which is comforting - as he will have to carry some of my gear on trips in the future....

Check out this view! Pictures don't entirely do justice - but that road down there looks pretty tiny, which shows just how high up we were! So rewarding!!

This will be an adventure! The back pack looks comfy but I'm sure when it is heavier, it will be a workout! Will it be too hot in AZ this summer to do it or will you find cooler mountain trails to backpack in? Looks like you received a great birthday present!

Oh cool! What a fun hobby for you guys to pick up. I can see why it's a great fit for you two since you are so outdoorsy. I have never been backpacking, but I think it is something I would also enjoy. Your goal trip sounds awesome!!

Currently - May edition

I haven't blogged much - but the last time I did one of these, Maddy was 9 months old. It's really fun looking back on the things that were "stressors" to me at that time. Prior to that - my currently post was a pregnancy edition.  So here goes May 2022. Maddy is almost a 15-month old and summer has set ablaze here in Tucson.   Reading :  I really wish I had a better answer for this one, but I have not been the best about reading lately. The only book I'm reading is "How to talk to your kids so they'll listen and listen so they'll talk". It is really good. Most of the book is geared more to school-aged kids, in my opinion. But it highlights some great communication skills with children to help them trust you as a parent to be open and honest. Eating: All the smoothies. It has been getting really hot here - and every day when we get home from our stroller run I make a smoothie for Maddy with whole milk, Fage, and fruit - and then a smoothie for...

A weekend of the great outdoors

As I am preparing for my return to the real world tomorrow, I feel a strong sense of dread. As I won't have a weekend or free week for a long while! Instead of focusing on that.......I'm sharing a few snapshots from our awesome weekend! This weekend we were in Big Lake, AZ -- which is about 20 miles from the New Mexico border (just 5 1/2 hours from our house). (last weekend we were in Parker Canyon...which I will blog about another day) We camped from Friday-Monday, which was the perfect length of time. The temperatures were a great escape from hot Tucson. In fact...it was VERY cold at night. It was in the low 30's at night, 60's during the day. The trout fishing was incredible. Here's a few snapshots: Home Sweet Home for the weekend! Look at the giant tree I cut down!!! Wow!! (Okay, this was posed...) But...Ryan did teach me how to use a wood-saw! There were tons of dead/fallen trees lying around. So we cut all our firewood for the weekend! I felt very ...

Good things

I must say there are many good things I have to be happy about right now! I am in my psychiatric-mental health nursing rotation right now. I originally chose nursing as my major beause from the time I was like 12 I wanted to be a psych nurse. I love it so far. The clinicals are incredible. I am finding I am more organized and ahead of things in this class than I ever have been! Now, if I could be this motived with Critical Care and my Capstone this summer......:) Ryan and I got an entire day together yesterday!!!! This is rare. My spring break kind of sucked. He would leave at about 6 a.m., and not return until 8 p.m. The poor guy is spread too thin! So I cherish a day like yesterday! Which consisted of............. Spring Training baseball!!!!!! Diamondbacks vs. Oakland Atheletics. It was nearly a close-out. 10-1. We met his bosses wife at the game and she insisted we ditch our seats & sit in the seats in front of them that they had purchased . So we were FRONT ROW BEHIND HO...
