The health remedies up my sleeve lately...

So I've tried a few new old wives tales "remedies". Not sure exactly what inspired me. Possibly a casual trip to Spouts? A focus on getting good nutrients in my body to keep me energized? I also started looking into some natural remedies, because about 1 month ago I has having a lot heartburn/upset stomach. I felt like there was constantly a bad taste in my mouth (despite the fact that I brush my teeth religiously 4-5 times daily!).

I won't say I've done these consistently, therefore my analysis may be skewed. But this is what I've tried, and here's what I've found!

  1. 1 1/2 oz Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar orally, on an empty stomach daily. I tried this a few times, and decided I can't quite "stomach it" (ha.). Even this vinegar lover couldn't take this burn. I tried mixing it with water and honey, and still couldn't tolerate it. But I know that taking cider vinegar orally helps balance the pH levels in your body. So instead - I try putting it on my salad at lunch most days of the week! Much more tolerable...
  2. Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil. I'd read too many articles about this not to try it! This girl oil pulled religiously while in the shower for 1 week. And decided it's not "my cup of tea". I will say my lips felt soft after doing it. But I hate the taste of coconut - so gagging for 10 minutes was not worth it. (For those of you who aren't familiar with oil pulling - it consists of taking 1 Tbsp of coconut oil, and swishing it through your teeth for 10 minutes. It's supposed to pull out the toxins in your body and help with oral health)
  3. Apple Cider Vinegar as a skin toner. Now this worked! Take 2 Tbsp's good cider vinegar to 2 cups Water. Dip a cotton ball in your solution, and wipe it on your face before bed at night. Don't worry about the smell. I promise it dissipates. My skin felt firm, and so clean afterwards! Once again, this helps with the pH and really stimulates your pores!
  4. Coconut Oil as a hair treatment. With all the swimming, sunshine, and dry desert air - my hair takes a beating. In the evening after my shower, I took 1 spoonful of coconut oil and worked it into my hair (starting at the roots). Now I will warn you. Your pillow might smell like a tiki hut. But it made my hair so shiny and soft the next day!
  5. Probiotics. This isn't really a "home remedy" - but I swear by these little pills! I have always major stomach cramping and discomfort after or while running. Almost to the point where I started asking myself, "Is this really worth it?" Since I've started taking probiotics, I haven't had a single stomach cramp while running! (knock on wood!) I don't quite understand this one. I take one every morning, and I also take one the night before I'm going to run.
Some of this may be in my head. But if it works and makes me feel good?--I'll keep it up! Do you have any natural (and cheap :D) remedies you practice at home? The cheap part is my favorite. I am blessed to have pretty "easy" skin, so find it really hard to spend more than $8 on a skin product. Using the cider vinegar from my kitchen is awesome!!

I have a fun apple cider vinegar drink that I make when I'm on call or night float but I want a "cocktail". I take diet hansen's brand ginger ale, or any other strong ginger flavor ginger ale and add a glug of ACV and a few ice cubes. I think the ginger balances the ACV. It's worth a try and must be better than just taking a swig of that stuff!!
Oh gosh, I could not drink ACV straight up, and definitely not on an empty stomach. I think I'd puke for sure. "Pulling" oil sounds like it's a puke inducer as well! ;) But it is smart to look into healthy/natural solutions for what is ailing us, I think. I'm just not so good about doing that myself!

Suzanne's idea for ACV sounds worth a try as I do believe that it is really good for a person! I have tried mixing it with water but still pretty brutal! The oil pulling - nada! I couldn't do that but commend you for trying! I have prety much replaced coconut oil for vegetable oils as they are very inflammatory for the body, so coconut oil & olive oil are my staples! I will try the cider vinegar as a toner, though!

Oh, and I have been taking a probiotic daily for several years now and think it is good for us! Of course, sauerkraut is a good probiotic but can't eat that everyday!

What is your color?

Green My favorite color ever! I have to control myself to not purchase too many green things. If I had no control, my house would be green. My kitchen would be lime-themed. With greenery everywhere. My bathrooms would be green. My bedroom would be green. You would all feel nauseated-green after entering my home. (So I don't have a green-themed home) Many things I love are green, such as: Spinach (I eat it a minimum twice a day usually) My weding color was green. (clover green) Limes (I have at least one time a day) Grass. I love the feel of grass, especially since I see it so rarely in AZ (except in my neighborhood that has amazing landscapers with grass-galore) Palm trees. Any tree. Christmas trees. I love Christmas Green Beer. I think the green beer on St. Patty's Day tastes better. My favorite color of eyes. When I was in 9th grade, I so badly wanted to get green contacts. But they made me keep my brown eyes. Diet Mountain Dew (my guilty pleasure) Granny Smith

Currently - May edition

I haven't blogged much - but the last time I did one of these, Maddy was 9 months old. It's really fun looking back on the things that were "stressors" to me at that time. Prior to that - my currently post was a pregnancy edition.  So here goes May 2022. Maddy is almost a 15-month old and summer has set ablaze here in Tucson.   Reading :  I really wish I had a better answer for this one, but I have not been the best about reading lately. The only book I'm reading is "How to talk to your kids so they'll listen and listen so they'll talk". It is really good. Most of the book is geared more to school-aged kids, in my opinion. But it highlights some great communication skills with children to help them trust you as a parent to be open and honest. Eating: All the smoothies. It has been getting really hot here - and every day when we get home from our stroller run I make a smoothie for Maddy with whole milk, Fage, and fruit - and then a smoothie for

8 Months

Well, I missed month 1-8. But it is never too late to begin, right? Here is a recap of Maddy at 8 months. (I'm totally stealing this idea from my sister, Lisa. I thought it was so neat that she recaps her son's favorites and happenings every month)   How am I sleeping? Better than I was - but not as good as my peers. It also depends on if I'm teething. Last week, her 2nd tooth was poking through - so she was awake 3 times.  No matter how much I let her cry it out, I cannot seem to cut down her feedings. When I go in there - she is literally pulling at my shirt with her mouth wide open. So clearly she's hungry.  She eats 2 times/night and luckily goes right back to sleep. It is what it is. What am I eating? While we have had breastfeeding and bottle refusal struggles - I am so glad that taking to food as been relatively smooth. We are doing baby led weaning, and Maddy really enjoys most every food I've given her.  Her favorite foods are scrambled eggs, apples, and c
