Changes

Many of us like to enter the New Year with changes. Resolutions. Goals. New endeavors. A brighter outlook.

This 2011 started out with many changes - and they weren't even by choice. It is incredible to me to realize how drastically different my life is now that I work nights. And I am so thankful I'm such a tight scheduler -- for it may be my only method of survival.

Here are a few things I've learned that can be applied to no matter what schedule I ever experience....
  • Cherish every moment you get. Every moment you get with your family. Every moment you get with your loved one. Prior to working nights, I was going "through the motions" BIG TIME. I took for granted the time I got to spend with Ryan. Now that we only get to sleep in the same bed, wake up together, eat normal meals, etc. a few nights a week -- I am sooo thankful on "normal nights".
  • Exercise restores energy. 4 days/week, I get my booty into the gym or out on the running trails and I burn off all the stress I've built up!!The first 5 minutes into my work out -- I feel completely restored and alive!
  • Vitamin D is your friend. Just a few minutes of sunshine  -- works wonders. Trust me on this.
  • The B-Complex Vitamins from Trader Joe's are fantastic. I have started taking one when I wake up. ***Disclaimer: your pee might look like you drank a Bic highlighter. Don't freak out though.
  • Melatonin is your friend. Unfortunately, I now cannot fall asleep without it. Ever. But, if that's what it takes for me to get my 5 hours (which used to be 7-8 hrs....) -- I'll do it!
  • Italian Roast EXTRA BOLD Starbucks beans = yum. And....if you bring in your empty bag to Starbucks, you get a free coffee!!
  • Planning out your meals before the week starts, you'll cook better, eat better, save money, and probably have fantastic left overs (since you planned ahead). (instead of just throwing something in a pan at the last minute....which I have been notorious for)
  • You don't have to clean your entire house in one day. No one gives you a gold medal if you did it. Also, no one is going to fine or punish you for doing one room a day. I have instilled a "Bathroom cleaning day", "Kitchen day", and "Floors/dusting day".Since cleaning destresses, it's nice to do a litte each day.
  • Cucumbers are not only a great snack, but are AMAZING in your eyeballs!! If your eyes burn, and you have garbage bags under you eyeballs -- lie down,  place cucumbers on face for just 5 minutes.
  • Live your life as you are, and don't worry what your neighbor's may think. If they have a problem, they can just simply ask "Why are you in your birkenstocks and flannel pj's getting the mail at 2:30pm??? Are you some sort of hermit depressed person??!!"
Hope everyone is having a great Monday. I am still feeling somber over the events of the weekend. It's so eerie. This afternoon, I went to the grocery store (the one where the attack occured) -- thinking by now it was cleared it. (It is the store I shop at, afterall).... And there are STILL cops all over the scene, news cameras, "crime scene" tape, the whole works. Unbelievable. My prayers are still with the families/loved ones of those affected by this senseless event

I think those are all great things to have learned!! It's so easy to get caught up in work or just life in general and sort of lose sight of the things that are really important, such as family and our health (mental and physical.)

It does always amaze me how much of a difference exercise can make!

I can't wait to get some vitamin D this weekend. It's not an option here in the midwest right now unfortunately!

That's a great list! I like your 'clean one room a day' approach. That's not super overwhelming, which is good!

Very good, interesting post! You have good suggestions which I should try, but running outside is not possible, or going to the gym in the land of no-where! I should get my wi-fit activated!

What is your color?

Green My favorite color ever! I have to control myself to not purchase too many green things. If I had no control, my house would be green. My kitchen would be lime-themed. With greenery everywhere. My bathrooms would be green. My bedroom would be green. You would all feel nauseated-green after entering my home. (So I don't have a green-themed home) Many things I love are green, such as: Spinach (I eat it a minimum twice a day usually) My weding color was green. (clover green) Limes (I have at least one time a day) Grass. I love the feel of grass, especially since I see it so rarely in AZ (except in my neighborhood that has amazing landscapers with grass-galore) Palm trees. Any tree. Christmas trees. I love Christmas Green Beer. I think the green beer on St. Patty's Day tastes better. My favorite color of eyes. When I was in 9th grade, I so badly wanted to get green contacts. But they made me keep my brown eyes. Diet Mountain Dew (my guilty pleasure) Granny Smith...

A weekend of the great outdoors

As I am preparing for my return to the real world tomorrow, I feel a strong sense of dread. As I won't have a weekend or free week for a long while! Instead of focusing on that.......I'm sharing a few snapshots from our awesome weekend! This weekend we were in Big Lake, AZ -- which is about 20 miles from the New Mexico border (just 5 1/2 hours from our house). (last weekend we were in Parker Canyon...which I will blog about another day) We camped from Friday-Monday, which was the perfect length of time. The temperatures were a great escape from hot Tucson. In fact...it was VERY cold at night. It was in the low 30's at night, 60's during the day. The trout fishing was incredible. Here's a few snapshots: Home Sweet Home for the weekend! Look at the giant tree I cut down!!! Wow!! (Okay, this was posed...) But...Ryan did teach me how to use a wood-saw! There were tons of dead/fallen trees lying around. So we cut all our firewood for the weekend! I felt very ...

One Confused Lady

Yesterday morning was packed with a session of cross training.....rushed home to shower and get professional-looking....headed across town for an interview.....kicked butt at my interview...."bopped" over to our house to see the progress of the build......headed to the "design center" to sign more paperwork.... (Side note: I cannot get over just how much paperwork is involved in building a house. Holy Hannah. And we haven't even closed !!! Iy-yi-yi....Those lovely people in history who got law-suit-happy.....God bless 'em.) Yesterday was a good day! So here's a little humor for your Thursday. A little thought. A little depth.....( A little cynical rant ) Afterwards, I decided to head to one of my favorite places to peruse.... Target. But my experience at Target was far from fun, relaxing, or pleasant. Just confusing. Loud. Crazy. Despite many screaming children-temper tantrums.... Which is common and un-escapable. Although screaming chi...
